1. Outline

Local-application Fire-extinguish System for Machinery Spaces is to be installed for extinguishing fire of an initial stage at/around main engines, generator engines, boilers, incinerators, oil purifiers and inert gas generators as introduced by SOLAS 2000 amendments. The ships for which this system to be applied are passenger ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards and cargo ships of 2,000 gross tonnage and upwards, both constructed on or after 1st July 2002.

2. Features of Water-mist Nozzles:

In order to make effective water-mist, special water-mist nozzles are required. Newly designed nozzles have been developed under technological cooperation between Seaplus Co., Ltd., Korea and us. These nozzles are type-approved by major classification societies including ClassNK and MED.

With the special nozzles, 0.75 MPa of fresh water pressurized with a pump is changed to extremely fine water-mist, which has great area of surface to be exposed to heat for maximizing mist-water vaporization. In the process, heat of fire is absorbed and ambient temperature in the space is cooled. Further, spread water-mist dilutes density of flammable gas and oxygen on surface of flammable substances and it helps fire-extinction.

Regarding influence to electric equipment, tests are carried out in accordance with the IMO guideline and it has been confirmed that the system can be used in the environment of IP22 grade and electric generators can be operated without problem after water-mist discharge.

3. Features of Components:

Control Panel, Selection Valves and F.W. Pump are combined in to one unit with piping and wiring installed, which reduces installation and fitting works at the shipyard. F.W. Pump is of energy-saving type. SGP galvanized pipe can be used.
